The music in Shadow of the Tomb Raider deserves special mention, not only were 4/5 awards presented to this game directly linked to the soundtrack, but to simply glaze over it would do the composer - Brian D'Oliveira - a disservice. Climbing in this title feels more adventurous, moving away from the mundane getting-from-A-to-B, becoming a fully interactive and challenging puzzle - even if the way she traverses the underside of platforms is wholly unrealistic. In addition to new gameplay features, the story was overhauled to give Lara more depth, allowing players to delve into her personality and understanding of the world around her. The new team brought a smorgasbord of changes and adaptations, including: Underwater exploration, grappling, in-depth difficulty tailoring, and even a photo mode. As with the previous title, Trinity are the bad guys, but this time around, good and bad isn't so cut and dry.ĭespite the success achieved through Crystal Dynamics, Shadow of the Tomb Raider was primarily developed by Eidos Montreal - Eidos Interactive being the original publishers of Tomb Raider until they merged with Square Enix. Potentially through her own actions, a chain of events is set in motion that may bring about the apocalypse, your job is to right the wrongs and save the world, by finding relics, traversing landscapes and dispatching enemies. Croft has made it her goal to obtain a mythical artifact and discover truths long forgotten. This final iteration is set in the Americas, two months after her endeavours in Rise of the Tomb Raider. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider we play as Elon Musk - just joking, it's Lara Croft. Critics dubbed the game "stale" and "more of the same", hopefully, I can explain why they're mistaken. Though receiving an average 9/10 on Steam, Metacritic scores were a bit less forgiving, with a general run of 78/100. The developing studio in this episode was Eidos Montreal, in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. Released in 2018, after 3 years of development, it is by far the best offering of the three.
